Participants in the Space Business Plan Hackathon will have exciting opportunities with the Beyond Space Institute's Business Plan Competition (BPC):

  • First Place Contestant: Will be automatically registered for the Beyond Space Institute BPC and stand a chance to win a grand prize of $250,000.
  • Follow-Up Contestants: Will be invited to present their innovative business plans at the prestigious Beyond Space Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., providing valuable exposure and networking opportunities.

Participants will concentrate on creating business plans in essential areas, including but not limited to dual-use technologies that benefit both space and terrestrial applications. These plans will aim to develop innovations that serve both the global space economy and the immediate needs of Earth, with a particular focus on enriching Puerto Rican communities. The participant may propose their own business plan concept or choose from the following:

  1. Microgravity Pharmaceuticals: Developing pharmaceutical manufacturing processes optimized for microgravity environments.
  2. Advanced Life Support Systems: Innovations in closed-loop life support systems that recycle air, water, and waste.
  3. Bioregenerative Life Support Systems: Using biological processes to regenerate life support systems, focusing on air purification and water recycling.
  4. Renewable Energy for Space Habitats: Solar, wind, and other renewable energy systems modified for use in space stations or habitats.
  5. Waste-to-Resource Technologies: Converting waste products into usable resources, such as energy or raw materials, in a space environment.
  6. Space Agriculture and Food Production: Techniques and technologies for growing food in space habitats, including hydroponics and aeroponics.
  7. Telemedicine and Remote Health Monitoring: Solutions for health monitoring and delivery of medical care in space through telemedicine technologies.
  8. Wearables for Space Missions: Design wearable technology to monitor astronaut vitals, assist with navigation, and improve overall mission safety and efficiency.
  9. Mental Health and Wellbeing in Isolation: Programs and technologies to support mental health for astronauts on long-duration missions.
  10. Advanced Materials for Space Habitats: Development of new materials that provide radiation shielding, durability, and support for life in space.
  11. Autonomous Systems and Machine Learning: Implement machine learning and autonomous technologies to manage space station operations, perform maintenance tasks, and analyze environmental data for decision-making.
  12. Interactive Interfaces for Astronaut-Robot Teams: Develop intuitive interfaces and systems that facilitate effective teamwork between astronauts and robots, enhancing task completion and mission success.
  13. Next-Gen Space Communication Networks: Advance communication technology to reduce delays, increase data transmission rates, and ensure reliable links for deep-space exploration.
  14. Innovative Space Tourism and Education: Craft unique, engaging experiences for space tourists that educate and simulate space travel, leveraging augmented and virtual reality.
  15. Space Habitat Architectural Innovation: Explore architectural designs and engineering solutions for compact, resource-efficient space habitats that optimize living conditions in confined spaces.
  16. Eco-friendly Space Propulsion Techniques: Research and develop propulsion technologies that are environmentally friendly, focusing on renewable or less harmful fuels for space exploration.
  17. Spaceport Logistics: Air launch logistics and space retrieval assets to enhance operational efficiency and expand service capabilities in space & terrestial transportation.
